What happens during a dental check-up?

A check-up is the foundation of preventive dentistry. Our dentists look for early signs of decay, gum disease and wear, well before you’d notice anything yourself. Catching problems early usually means simpler, less costly treatment down the track.

  • Visual and physical examination of teeth, gums and bite
  • Digital X-rays where needed to check between and beneath teeth
  • An oral cancer and soft tissue screening
  • A plain-English explanation of any findings, with no pressure to treat anything you’re not ready for

Radiographs (X-rays) help us check for decay between and beneath your teeth that isn’t visible to the eye. Depending on your individual decay risk, small X-rays are typically recommended every one to two years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How often should I get a dental check-up?
Most patients should have a check-up every six months. If you have a higher risk of decay or gum disease, we may recommend more frequent visits, and we’ll explain exactly why if that applies to you.
