Raising Cavity Free Kids

Contact us to schedule an appointment for your child. We offer Gap Free Dental for children.

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a new child dental program that came into effect on the 1 January 2014, replacing the Medicare Teen Dental Plan. Child Dental Benefits Schedule provides eligible children and teenagers aged 2 to 17 with up to $2000, capped over two consecutive calendar years

We help parents raise cavity free children. With improved technology it may be possible to eliminate tooth decay in children. In other words, the unpleasant dental experiences of your youth do not have to be repeated on your children. We do everything in our power to make sure you are aware of the specific ways to prevent tooth decay for your child. What that means is you save money and your child remains healthy!

Baby’s First Teeth

As seen from the chart, the first teeth begin to break through the gums at about 6 months of age. Usually, the first two teeth to erupt are the two bottom central incisors (the two bottom front teeth). Next, the top four front teeth emerge. After that, other teeth slowly begin to fill in, usually in pairs — one each side of the upper or lower jaw — until all 20 teeth (10 in the upper jaw and 10 in the lower jaw) have come in by the time the child is 2 ½ to 3 years old.

The following charts shows when permanent teeth emerge.

Children’s Dental Examination

The dentist will examine the health and condition of the child’s teeth, gums, soft tissues, head and neck.  The dentist will also monitor the  growth of the jaw and the development of the teeth and evaluate any oral habits such as thumb sucking.  It is also recommended to take X-rays to detect cavities developing between the teeth.  An OPG may be necessary to view the child’s entire mouth and jaw. It shows any permanent teeth that are missing, abnormal growth, extra teeth or other oral issues  The dentist will also check to see if the child will require any orthodontic treatment.

Children’s Teeth Cleaning

It is recommended that they visit the dentist every 6 months to clean the teeth to remove any plaque or calculus.  This is very important because children are known for not brushing their teeth or incorrectly brushing their teeth and if the plaque builds up it may cause gum disease and tooth decay.  The dentist will also treat the the teeth with fluoride to strengthen them and make them resistant to tooth decay.

Extractions

Primary teeth or “baby teeth” play an important role in a child’s life for proper chewing, speaking and speech development. Primary teeth also maintain proper spacing for the permanent teeth and help guide the permanent teeth when they finally cut through the gums. So whenever possible, dentists try to preserve the natural baby tooth when treating for decay or damage.

Fissure Sealants

We recommend fissure sealant treatment when your child’s first permanent teeth come through, usually at the age of 6-7 years and the remainder of teeth be sealed as they appear thereafter usually between 11-14 years.

A fissure(or pit) sealant is a thin, plastic film that is applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth creating a protective barrier which prevents food and bacteria getting into these teeth.

This safe and painless technique thereby protects childrens’ teeth and prevents dental decay.

Fissure sealants:

  • Are safe and effective
  • Painless in application and unnoticeable after treatment
  • Prevent decay of molars and premolars
  • Should last for many years
  • Easier to keep clean due to a smoother tooth surface
  • Reduce the likelihood of fillings in your child’s mouth

We are often asked “What is the best age to bring my child in for his first dental visit?” We believe that a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums starts at a very early age, at about 1.5 years old. We encourage parents to bring their young children into our office and show them around.

Rose Rusevska is very good with children, many times, the best strategy for the child is to watch Mum or Dad get their teeth examined and professionally cleaned.

In this way a child can get comfortable with the new surroundings and will learn that this is truly a safe and fun place to be.
